Migration ecology of desert songbirds

Migratory birds breeding in arid regions of western North America face environmental and ecological conditions that largely differ from those experienced by warblers breeding in eastern North America. How do these conditions shape migratory behaviors and population dynamics in desert-breeding migratory songbirds? What areas do these species use during the annual cycle and where and how can conservation actions have the greatest effect? These are questions Silas Fischer (PhD student, University of Toledo), Henry Streby (University of Toledo), and I are interested in addressing using tracking data collected from gray vireos, ash-throated flycatchers, and Scott’s orioles. Silas will take the lead in this effort with these questions forming a portion of their dissertation.
